The electronic text of Tacitus was originally provided by Virginia Tech, and is available at that site as an ASCII text file: gopher://gopher.vt.edu:10010/10/33
The electronic edition, originally translated by Alfred John Church and William Jackson Brodribb, did not include any internal text divisions other than the primary book divisions. To make the text more usable for students to search and quote, the paragraph indexing used in The Modern Library edition of Church and Brodribb's text, published under the title of The Complete Works of Tacitus, 1942, was added along with HTML links, and then the text was converted to HTML.
